How To Use The Therapeutic Drawing Series With Assessments – A Closer Look

The Therapeutic Drawing Series (TDS) was designed with 3 elements that are key to our early stages of development; Color, Line, and Design (CLD). For example, in the kindergarten, we learn that shapes make-up letters and the letters compose the alphabet.  In part, we use CLD to accomplish this learning. Therefore, when working with the TDS, we believe we are working in the same areas of the brain that were already developed as children-visual spatial.  While using  the TDS we analyze and compare shape structures and colors, this is remediation and for our purposes rehabilitative in nature.  The Del Giacco Neuro Art Therapy (DAT) theory believes that the information processing systems  lay deep in the hippocampus (Limbic system) and is affected negatively when short-term memory is not functioning well.  It is here that we focus on a bottom’s up method to grow new pathways. It is our belief that by stimulating the action of plasticity using developmental drawings we can have positive effects on Attention. The TDS is designed to work in the brain areas where attention may have been altered. Here are some examples of who has been helped with this therapy: Brain Injury, PTSD, Stroke, Brain tumors, Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, some Autistic problems, ADD and ADHD.  Additionally, the DAT program has helped clients from 5 to 90 years old. Improvements in focusing, and attention are the first areas to progress, and then anxiety and depression may become improved.

How can the TDS help so many different types of problems at so many developmental levels? The answer is simple, we all have information processing systems that may not be working properly and causing poor attention. We often refer to this type of problem as an encoding and decoding deficit. When this occurs it opens the door to a wide host of issues; Poor attention, anxiety, and depression.
