About

Maureen Del Giacco, Ph.D., LCAT, R.M.

A Special Message: The Del Giacco Art Therapy Program is a project that I have been developing over the last 25 years; these techniques first served as a means for my own recovery from a traumatic brain injury, and then for other survivors as well. I had promised the funding sources that I would develop this program for other professionals and I have done that. For the last 14 years I have trained professionals from around the world who have also found the methods extraordinary. Please see the Peer Reviews and Student Papers.  I am excited to offer the DAT Program to other professionals. In Course 1, I offer an in depth look at each of the 3 applications. Then in the other Courses you will be trained to move forward at an Advanced level.  I am verified on Psychology Today.

I am a Licensed, Registered and Certified Creative Arts Therapist, Cognitive Rehabilitation Specialist and Reiki Master.  I have served as the Executive Director for the Brain Trauma Art Therapy Recovery Center, and I have been an approved Provider of Services for the New York State Education Department-VESID and the Department of Health-OMRDD.  To help establish and develop the Del Giacco Neuro Art Therapy (DAT) program I received grants from many sources: The New York State Legislature, Met Life, Charitable Venture, William Gundry-Broughton, American Eagles, Saratoga Hospital, the Independent Living Centers to name a few. I have been a guest speaker at numerous facilities and earn the prestigious “Founders Award” from the New York State Brain Injury Association. Additionally, I have many publications; Eric.Gov iBook and e-books on Amazon.com.

The “Del Giacco Neuro Art Therapy” (DAT) is designed to help persons with deficits in attention, including those with brain injury, stroke, ADD, ADHD, PTSD and a host of other conditions that can cause cognitive deficits. The DAT process moves in unison with current neuroscience findings that relate to plasticity and the binding mechanisms of attention.  In short, the DAT program utilizes 3 applications:The Therapeutic Drawing Series, the Cognitive Range of Motion Exercises and specific Computer Exercises. All applications are designed to be developmental and can be adjusted to each client’s level of functioning. The DAT process offers special assessments that are modified for use with the applications.

Following careful assessment and review of a client’s health records, the DAT certificate holder initially works to stimulate the Bottom’s-up Sensory Mechanism of Pre-Attention, then moves toward the encoding and decoding structures of the brain.  Once these structures are strong enough, the DAT therapist integrates critical thinking exercises to engage the fluent, more comprehensive sub-sensory-systems.

DAT applications have been in practice for nearly 20 years. Certified practitioners have grown to include more than 70 professionals from around the world.
